Artist ReflectionI wrote the song “Table of Life: in this (just ending) Year of the Eucharist about the indescribable love God shows for us in the gift of the Eucharist. The refrain is almost an exact biblical quote (God always says it best) and says a lot about the depth of God's love for us: All who thirst, come to the water, All who hunger, eat without price. Why spend your wages On what fails to satisfy? Come to the table of life. It's a funny thing, but it seems that no matter how old we are or how long we live, it is so easy to "spend our wages" on things that leave us empty. Even when we know for CERTAIN that what we're doing is not good for us, we keep coming back, thinking maybe this time it will be different, better, not as wrong or whatever. The truth is that there is only one way to fill the emptiness that we ALL feel in our heart. The first time I ever went on a retreat I was a Sophomore in high school. We all got a Bible with a handmade bookmark in it, and my bookmark said: "There is a God shaped vacuum in your heart that only God can fill." I believe this is true. In the grand scheme of things, I think that evil takes over very few people in this world. I think most of the things that we do that are "bad", "wrong" or "sinful" are because we are trying to fill an emptiness that we know is inside us... And it IS there! YOU'RE NOT IMAGINING THINGS! But the trick is, none of those things will fill the emptiness. The hole in your heart is GOD shaped. Nothing else will do it. I wrote this when some hard things were going on and I needed to rely on God... so, it reminds ALL of us to give the best of ourselves to God. To partake of the food that sustains us forever; that helps us to be strong, to be confident and fulfilled in ways that no sport or song or boyfriend or girlfriend can. That is what makes God actually AWESOME. That he gives us all that for free... No strings attached! So show up! Make it to Mass. Be unafraid to pray... just in your own words... to know God as a part of your life not just a story in an old book. He knows you're biggest hurts and greatest joys. So why spend your wages on things that won't EVER satisfy you? Come to the Table of Life. |
